Three Card Spread
Something to frame the new year.
Happy New Year’s Eve! May we step into our power in 2025.
This seemed like an apt moment to share my favourite simple spread, which I use all the time both in readings for myself & for clients. You can use it to focus in on a specific area of your life (career, relationships etc) or as an overview of the way the energies are moving. I mostly use it for the latter, but your mileage may vary.
Some things to pay extra attention to when you’re doing an overview style reading like this (& really any reading honestly):
The suits of the cards. If you’re pulling all one particular suit, that’s likely to be an ongoing theme. The suit of the 3rd card can give you some insights into what area of your life this energy is coming into. If there’s a noticeable lack of a particular suit this may not be the year you’re focusing on that energy. Very broadly the suits represent: Wands - action in the physical world, battle (physical or intellectual). Cups - emotions & relationships. Swords - thinking about shit, mental world. Pentacles - cash money, career, & physical security.
Majors or minors. If you’ve got all Major Arcana cards (like The Fool, The Lovers, The Devil, etc) core developments & energies may be at play. This could be bigger than you, or it could be a part of your larger life path.
Card numbers. If you’re pulling all of a certain number (or even 2 out of 3) there’s something at play there. Look up numerology meanings or check out Rachel Pollack’s The New Tarot Handbook for overviews of each number's general energy in tarot.
Now without further ado, the spread!
1: What is leaving?
This card shows us what shit we’re leaving behind. We may be leaving it by choice, it may have decided to move on, or it may have full on abandonded us. How ever its ended up going, going is what it’s doing.
2: What is here?
This card shows what we’re currently stewing in. If we’re stuck, the hangup that’s got us pinned will show here. If we’re not stuck, whatever impermenent moment we’re inhabiting is here. Nothing lasts forever, so this position is just where we currently at.
3: What is on its way?
This card takes a peek into our futures. This is the energy that’s currently on the driveway headed our way. Can we redirect it? Can we avoid it? Maybe. Do we want to? That’s less clear.
